Abstract
Biodiversity is essential for food security, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. The National Seed Genebank, established in 1984 with funding from FAO, is located in the IPGR-Sadovo. The Information Center of plant genetic resources operates in accordance with the international documentation standards of FAO/Bioversity, following the priorities of open access to conserved collections in Europe and maintaining a global germplasm exchange system. The registered gene pool includes 66,555 accessions, stored ex situ and 243 in situ populations. The status of the collections is represented by local forms and crop wild relatives, introduced accessions, new varieties and breeding materials. Priorities are aimed at improving data quality and implementing innovative technologies. The aim of the study is to apply new techniques to improve documentation and management of accessions. The results guarantee the participation of the Bulgarian genebank in international information networks and support the establishment of the quality standard in the process of preserving the gene pool.
