25. Bulgarian foods with protected designation of origin: an opportunity for developing regenerative tourism

Abstract

Bulgaria ranks second in registered foods of traditional specific character in the European Union. This allows a special mark to be placed on the package with which the product is presented to consumers. Strandzhanski manov med/Manov med ot Strandzha is the only product in Bulgaria with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Certificate, which is a guarantee of quality and authenticity of the product. The production of Strandzhanski manov med is concentrated in the Strandzha region, where the plant species are specific such as, Strandzhanska zelenika, heather, kaluna, pamuklija, tamyanka, Strandzhanski zub and others, and their properties are the basis for proving the PDO of Strandzhanski manov med. The aim of this article is to present and analyze the problems, challenges and possible solutions that arise in the production of Strandzhanski manov med and the development of regenerative tourism in the Strandzha mountain region.
