Abstract
The global challenges related to the scarcity of resources and climate change led to a change in production and consumption and implementation of various policies and measures. The strong commitment of the EU and the ambitious goals and targets require commitment and efforts for all Member-states of the EU.
The aim of the study is to observe the dynamics in the use of renewable energy sources in the EU and Bulgaria and to outline recommendations for accelerated growth of renewable energy.
The analysis shows that the share of renewable energy is growing in all EU member states. The Scandinavian countries are the leaders in all analysed indicators. Bulgaria shows results lower than the average for the EU. In addition, there is a slower growth rate in the observed indicators.
In order to achieve the goals, it is necessary for the EU member states to increase their commitment and implement the local approach. Financial, technological and organizational barriers should be addressed through policies that help at regional and local levels new business models to be developed.
