Of the many themes in Byron’s poem, the theme of freedom is separated out in the paper and the idea of freedom as present in the text is outlined: in the opposition between the struggle for independence and the servile attitude; in the ambivalent presentation of war; in the rejection of society and the praise of nature. Finally, the historic place of the poem is sought: both in the context of English literature, and in the development of European civilization.
