In recent decades, organic farming is becoming more and more popular among farmers and consumers worldwide as a result of its contribution to the protection of the environment and biodiversity and the provision of high quality and healthy food products. Its importance is underlined by the fact that it ranks among the official quality schemes in EU agriculture. Organic farming is defined as a priority sector in Bulgaria, as well. In this article indicators of trends in organic farming are commented, and the benefits of its implementation and opportunities for rural development. Successful examples and the main factors contributing to the increase in biological areas and the number of organic farms in Bulgaria are analyzed.
