Building a smarter, greener and more competitive economy requires improved coordination and alignment of the various regional policies and national strategies with the Europe 2020 Strategy. This will lead to a balanced and sustainable regional development and reduce social and regional imbalances. The purpose of the article is to assess the implementation of regional development policy in Bulgaria in particular, to analyze the socio-economic problems of the South-Central region and summarize recommendations for improvement in the context of Bulgaria’s membership in the European Union.
